Book a Board

Good questions

FAQ

Do I need experience to rent a paddle board?

No.

Most people are surprised by how quickly they get comfortable. Portage Bay is calm, protected, and an ideal place to learn, whether it's your first time on a board or your first time in a while.

How long can I rent a paddle board for?

Rent by the hour, half day, full day, or through a membership.

Some people come out for a quick paddle before dinner. Others spend an afternoon exploring Lake Union and the surrounding waterways.

What's included with my rental?

Your board, paddle, leash, and life jacket are all included.

Arrive a few minutes early, get checked in, and you're ready to head out.

Should I book in advance?

We recommend it, particularly during the summer.

Weekends, Seattle Paddle Raves, Seafair, and Fourth of July tend to fill quickly, though we'll always do our best to accommodate walk-ins when space allows.

Where are you located?

We're based inside the historic Jensens Marine Building, directly on Portage Bay behind St. Bread. From our dock, you can head toward Gas Works Park, the Montlake Cut, the University of Washington waterfront, or the quiet shoreline of the Washington Park Arboretum. It's one of the reasons we love being based here.

Is paddle boarding in Seattle beginner-friendly?

Very much so.

The water around Portage Bay is generally calmer than the main lake, making it a comfortable place to start. Most beginners find their footing within the first few minutes.

Where can I paddle from Portage Bay?

Head west into Lake Union, explore the floating homes, paddle through the Montlake Cut, or stay close to the bay.

There isn't really a wrong route. The best part is seeing Seattle from a perspective most people rarely experience.

What makes Portage Bay such a great place to paddle?

Portage Bay sits at the intersection of some of Seattle's best waterways.

Within a single paddle, you can explore Lake Union's floating homes, the University of Washington waterfront, the Montlake Cut, Gas Works Park, and the quiet shoreline of the Washington Park Arboretum.

Just as importantly, the bay itself is calmer and more protected than much of the main lake, making it a comfortable place for first-time paddlers and experienced paddlers alike.

It's one of the reasons we chose to call it home.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Not usually.

During the summer, most guests are comfortable in athletic clothing or swimwear. In spring and fall, an extra layer is often welcome.

As with any day on the water, it's best to dress for the conditions.

Can University of Washington students rent paddle boards?

Absolutely.

Being located on the UW waterfront means students are never far from the water. Whether you're looking for a study break, a different view of campus, or an afternoon outside, you're in the right place.

Is a membership worth it?

If you plan on paddling regularly, it usually is.

Memberships are designed for people who want easy access to the water throughout the season, along with additional perks and priority access during busy periods.

What's included with a membership?

Membership benefits vary by plan but may include discounted or unlimited paddling, priority reservations, guest passes, and access to member events.

It's a simple way to make time on the water part of your routine.

What is the Seattle Paddle Rave?

Part paddle outing, part floating gathering.

Throughout the summer, hundreds of people take to the water for evenings built around music, community, and long daylight hours.

It's become one of Seattle's most anticipated on-the-water events.

Can I watch the Fourth of July fireworks from a paddle board?

Yes.

Being on Lake Union for the fireworks is a Seattle tradition for good reason. The view from the water is difficult to beat, and reservations tend to book well in advance.

What is Seafair like from the water?

It's one of the busiest weekends of the year.

With hydroplanes, the Blue Angels, and thousands of people on and around the water, Seafair offers a completely different side of Seattle's boating culture.

Is paddle boarding good for families?

Yes.

The protected water around our dock makes it approachable for younger paddlers, and many families make a day of it during the summer months.

If you're bringing children, reach out ahead of time and we'll help you choose the right setup.

What happens if the weather changes?

Safety always comes first.

If conditions aren't suitable for paddling, we'll work with you to reschedule your booking.
